In the center of Logan Square, a mural honors three Chicago firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice 38 years ago.
On Feb. 1, 1985, Capt. Daniel Nockels and Firefighters Michael Talley and Michael Forchione, all assigned to Truck 58, answered their final alarm -- an arson blaze.
The restored artwork was re-dedicated at a ceremony attended by firefighters' families, neighbors and fire personnel, WGN reported.
“38 years, five months, eight days. For those of us who survived the tragedy of that frigid cold night, this space in time is tough to comprehend,” Paul Nockels, son of Capt. Nockels told the gathering.
Chicago Fire Commissioner Annette Nance Holt said: “Despite the passing of time from the tragedy that took our brothers Nockels, Forchione and Talley 38 years ago, we are here to remind the families and the community that we will never forget the sacrifices of Chicago Fire Department’s own, whose selfishness and courage will always shine brighter.”
